The Yamaha WXA-50 offers a lot for its price. This is an integrated amplifier, but it also has a full digital section and a streamer with all the bells and whistles. Yamaha intends for the WXA-50 to serve as the nerve centre of your home theatre system. Also, the pricing is fair, so I can’t wait to see how well it functions.

As soon as you take the Yamaha WXA-50 out of the box, you’ll be impressed by its sturdy metal construction. The aluminium panels and steel frame provide the impression of durability and sophistication. As a result, despite the device’s low profile, it feels quite substantial in the hand. Little needs to be said about the front of the device, as it only features a power button, a button to choose the input, and a pause/play button. Next to them are two status LEDs and a huge, clicky aluminium volume knob. The included vertical stand allows you to set up your WXA-50 in either a horizontal or vertical orientation.

The unit’s back is where all the action really begins. The first noticeable feature is the presence of what appear to be high-quality speaker binding posts that can accommodate speakers with impedances as low as 4 Ohms. There is only one set of RCA inputs (for a source like a CD player) and one set of RCA outputs in the Analog area. An optical SPDIF input is included in the Digital subsystem, allowing you to hook up a DAC or television that doesn’t have an analogue output. The USB input is for connecting storage devices like USB flash drives and is not designed to take an audio stream. But the most interesting part is the built-in streamer and we have two ways of connecting to it – via Ethernet cable or by using a Bluetooth connection. In addition, the back features a subwoofer out and 12V triggers.

For more accurate sound reproduction, the WXC-50 is compatible with high-resolution audio files such as Apple Lossless (ALAC) documents up to 96 kHz/24-bit and FLAC, AIFF, and WAV files up to 192 kHz/24-bit. Additionally, DSD streams up to 5.6 MHz can be played back locally on a single device. When it comes to providing music and sound, MusicCast uses a high-performance wireless network. The MusicCast system allows you to share digital music files from your smartphone, computer, or network attached storage system with other MusicCast devices around the house. The sound from other devices, such as a television or Blu-ray player, can be piped in as well. MusicCast equipment in many rooms can also receive wireless audio streams from Bluetooth-connected smartphones and tablets.

The WXC-50 utilises the same ESS Technology DAC found in Yamaha’s top-tier AV receivers, along with other cutting-edge circuit designs, to faithfully recreate musical performances in all their nuanced glory. Compressed Music Enhancer, Volume Adaptive Equalization, and Advanced Bass Extension Processing are just a few of Yamaha’s in-house audio processing technologies that help lower-quality music files sound better.
