Hello, the warm season! While it will be a ways before things get really interesting, Labor Day marks the unofficial start of the season. If you are here, you are presumably undertaking some kind of holiday planning. It’s a three-day weekend, so get ready to relax with friends and family by cooking out and tanning (hopefully) in the sun. As the Memorial Day holiday falls on a different day each year, a natural follow-up question is “where can I shop on that day?” Will the stores I frequent in 2023 still be open on Labor Day? When hosting a pool party or barbecue, it’s wise to be prepared for everything. You’re not alone in taking advantage of a day off to celebrate a federal holiday.
No matter where you are, you will be able to go shopping for Labor Day essentials such as food and a new swimsuit (why do they magically vanish just before they’re needed again?). We have gathered a list of grocery stores, petrol stations, and other businesses that will be open on Labor Day so that you may plan your day accordingly. As each state has its unique liquor rules, including whether businesses selling beer, wine, and/or spirits can be open on the holiday, it is impossible to say whether or not you will be able to buy alcohol on Black Friday. If you live in one of the following states or the District of Columbia, chances are good that your local liquor store (or store that sells liquor) will be open: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, D.C., Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, or Wisconsin.
But even if you don’t happen to be in the state, it doesn’t mean there’s no hope for you. In the state of Pennsylvania, for instance, some holidays (like Labor Day) do not result in the complete closure of retail outlets; rather, they just close earlier than usual (at 5 p.m.). Kansas retailers are closed, though, because of the Labor Day holiday. Before you go out of your way to buy supplies on Labor Day, make sure to call ahead or, even better, go shopping on Saturday.
