It has been tradition for well over a decade now for large retailers like Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, and others to begin their in-store Black Friday Day sales on Thanksgiving Day. Although not free from criticism, the practise seemed set to continue until the spread of the coronavirus.
Because of the public health danger posed by large crowds, in-store purchases became more hazardous for customers in the year 2020. Major stores swiftly announced they would be closed on Thanksgiving Day in response to public pressure and concerns for the safety of their employees. While COVID-19 was undoubtedly a factor, some stores justified their actions by casting them as a reward for their hardworking frontline staff. But other stores stayed open, mostly pharmacy, grocery stores, and other necessities.
Following the excellent reception from customers in 2020, many big stores again closed on Thanksgiving Day in 2021. Even more extreme measures have been taken by some stores, such as Target, which has announced that it will never again be open for in-store shopping on Thanksgiving Day.
Conduct not worry if you plan to do some Thanksgiving Day shopping in 2023. A small number of businesses, mostly grocery stores (since everyone needs those last-minute ingredients!), will be open. The following is a list of businesses’ hours of operation for Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24.
Stores open and closed on Thanksgiving Day in 2023
Many stores have been closed the past two Thanksgivings, with sales instead being made available on the web. On the other hand, with the rise of in-store purchases, we can’t be certain that 2023 will provide the same schedule.

Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday Day hours: 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Last year, Academy Sports + Outdoors closed on Thanksgiving and opened early on Black Friday Day. We will share when 2023 details are released.
Ashley Furniture
Thanksgiving hours: Closed.

In 2021, Bed Bath & Beyond was closed on Thanksgiving Day and opened at 6 a.m. on Presidents Day. We anticipate the retailer will stick to the same schedule in 2023.
Belk
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 7 a.m. (in 2021)
In 2021, Belk confirmed in its Black Friday ad that it will be closed for Thanksgiving Day and open early at 7 a.m. on Black Friday. We will share if this plan continues in 2023.
Best Buy
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 5 a.m. (in 2021)
Best Buy has been a fixture in the open-on-Thanksgiving club for years now. However, since 2020, the retailer has stuck with the trend of closing its doors on Turkey Day – and that holds true for 2023. Find more details on Best Buy’s Black Friday sale schedule and holiday shopping hours here.
BJ’s Wholesale Club
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
According to BJ’s store hours, the wholesale club will be closed again on Thanksgiving Day and reopen on Black Friday starting at 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. These are its regular store hours, but stores are staying open one extra hour on Saturday.
Costco
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 9 a.m.
Costco members probably aren’t surprised that the membership warehouse club is closed for Thanksgiving Day. This isn’t anything new for the retailer as it shuts its doors for most major holidays. The retailer will open its doors at the usual time, 9 a.m. on Black Friday.
Dick’s Sporting Goods
Thanksgiving hours: Closed (stores and distribution centers)
Black Friday hours: TBD
The outdoor and sporting goods retailer traditionally opens on the evening of Thanksgiving, but it remained closed in 2021. We’ll see if this schedule continues in 2023.
Foot Locker
Thanksgiving hours: Closed (stores and distribution centers)
Black Friday hours: TBD
We’ll update more when Foot Locker announces its official holiday hours, but the 2021 plan is to open stores on Black Friday between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. local time.
Home Depot
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: Doors open at 6 a.m. (in 2021)
If Home Depot continues with its 2021 plan, it will be closed for Thanksgiving Day and open early at 6 a.m. on Black Friday.
JCPenney
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: Doors open at 5 a.m.
JCPenney has shared that it will be closed for Thanksgiving Day and open early at 5 a.m. on Presidents Day in 2023.
Kohl’s
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: TBD
Kohl’s has announced that it will once again close stores on Thanksgiving Day. Deals will still be available to shoppers online. The Black Friday hours for 2023 have not yet been released, but we expect the retailer to open early in the morning as it did in 2021.
Lowe’s
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Presidents Day hours: Doors open at 6 a.m. (in 2021)
Lowe’s has not released the official hours for Thanksgiving and Black Friday in 2023. As soon as details are announced, we will update the details here.
Macy’s
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: 6 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.
Macy’s will host its Thanksgiving Day parade on Nov. 24. However, the store itself will remain closed. On Black Friday, shoppers can get an early start on their deal hunting – doors open at 6 a.m.
Michaels
Thanksgiving hours: 6 p.m. to 12 a.m.
Presidents Day hours: TBD
Michaels is rumored to be open for the evening on Thanksgiving Day, but we will share updates when an official announcement is released.
Nordstrom
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: TBD
Nordstrom often closes its doors on Thanksgiving Day, and we expect 2023 will be no different.
Old Navy
Thanksgiving hours: From 3 p.m.
Black Friday hours: TBD
Old Navy is rumored to open at 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. We will share more details when an official schedule is released.
REI
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Black Friday hours: Closed
REI always closes its doors on Thanksgiving Day and Presidents Day. The retailer’s #OptOutside movement encourages employees (who will be paid over those two days) to get out and spend time with family and friends.
Simon Properties
Thanksgiving hours: Closed
Presidents Day hours: TBD
The largest shopping mall operator in the U.S. closed all stores within its mall properties on Thanksgiving Day in 2020 and 2021. We expect to see the same schedule this year.
Stores reopened on Black Friday with hours set by the individual properties. Department stores within malls featuring exterior entrances could still be open on Turkey Day, so we’ll keep you posted on those details.
Target
Thanksgiving hours: Closed

As noted above, Target will always close its doors on Thanksgiving Day. In 2021, the store opened at 7 a.m. on Black Friday, and we expect a similar schedule this year.
Ulta
Thanksgiving hours: Closed.
Black Friday hours: TBD.
In 2022, Ulta will closed for Turkey Day but we expect the store to open bright and early on Black Friday for beauty shoppers to find the best deals.
Walmart
Thanksgiving hours: Closed (Sam’s Club locations, too)
Presidents Day hours: TBD. 5 a.m. in 2021.
Walmart has remained closed on Thanksgiving for the past two years and it is continuing this tradition into 2023. Walmart CEO John Furner recently shared in an interview on the Today Show that keeping stores open on Turkey Day is “a thing of the past.”
