There is a wide variety of Bluetooth speakers available from Marhsall, and the $299.99 Kilburn II falls between the Stockwell II and the Tufton in terms of cost and size. Although the Kilburn II may be carried by its sling, making it portable even for a midsize model, it is too heavy and cumbersome to simply stuff in a backpack. The good news is that despite its diminutive stature, it is capable of producing respectable output, and the movable bass and treble controls let you to tailor the sound to your preferences. The Marshall Kilburn II is a perfectly serviceable product, however it seems overpriced for what it provides.

This Kilburn II boxer comes in either black or gray faux leather. With its foldable strap and compact dimensions of 6.5 by 9.6 by 5.5 inches (HWD), this bag is easy to take with you wherever you need to go. As a bonus, it has a classy appearance, resembling a traditional guitar strap with a velvet backing.

The Kilburn II has a metal grille for a front end and the Marshall name in script across it. A single 20-watt woofer and two 8-watt tweeters are hidden away behind the grille, allowing for a wide frequency response (52Hz to 20kHz).

You can adjust the volume, bass, and treble with the three knobs along the top panel. A lack of playback controls is a major flaw. The panel also features a Bluetooth pairing button and an LED that indicates battery life. The power cable plugs into a concealed socket on the back, and the 3.5mm aux input is exposed. A vent for the drivers’ exhaled air is located in the back panel.

The Kilburn II only has an IPX2 rating for resistance to water. Simply holding it at a small angle can prevent water from dripping over the speaker. Light rain is no problem, but don’t take this speaker to the beach or use it in the garden because its IP rating is so poor that it won’t protect it from even light rain.

The lack of a 3.5mm aux input cord and the absence of a speakerphone feature are surprising given the asking price.

Marshall estimates the Kilburn II’s battery life to be roughly 20 hours, but your results will vary with your volume levels.

Is Marshall Kilburn worth it?

With its compact design, the Marshall Kilburn II delivers a surprisingly robust sound. However, the cost is a bit much: In the end, the quality of sound does not match our expectations for a $300 speaker. Definitely more low end is needed; the lows stop before they reach anything resembling a subwoofer’s range of power.
