The JBL Flip 6 looks to continue the tradition of rugged, portable Bluetooth speakers from the JBL brand, which are perfect for camping trips and poolside get-togethers. Although it has undergone some visual changes and what appears to be a better audio arrangement, the JBL Flip 7 still feels quite similar to the JBL Flip 5.
The JBL Flip 6 isn’t the first Bluetooth speaker from JBL to look like this, and that’s because the design is effective; two previous JBL speakers share space among our top picks for this category. The driver and tweeter are located in the middle of a cylindrical enclosure that is flanked by passive bass radiators at both ends. It can withstand being stuffed into a small bag and being dropped on the ground. The “JBL” logo on the Flip 6 is now larger and simpler, but it’s also more likely to scratch than the one on the Flip 5. Minor issues aside, it’s the same sturdy construction and familiar design as before.
The Flip 6 improves on the Flip 5’s IPX7 classification by earning an IP67 certification, making it completely dust- and water-proof. The speaker can withstand being dunked in sea water, and unlike the Bose SoundLink Flex, sand will not get trapped behind the grille or the bass drivers. The speaker is protected from complete destruction thanks to plastic bumpers. Though this helps prevent dents, it also means that these spots get scratched and marked up very rapidly. The illuminated Bluetooth and power buttons are situated close to a carrying loop. There is no clip included with the loop. If it frays or breaks, though, you may easily untie it and re-tie it. In addition, a USB-C charging port is included.
How long does the battery last on the JBL Flip 6?
According to JBL, the Flip 6 can play music for up to 12 hours on a single charge. The box only contains a USB-C to USB-A charging cable and not a power supply. Our default battery life test involves continuous playback of music at a maximum output level of 75 dB (SPL) as measured 1 metre in front of the speaker. We only got 9 hours and 25 minutes out of the JBL Flip 6, which is significantly less than what JBL advertises. It may last through a beach party or a day of hiking before needing to be recharged or a battery pack brought along.
Should you buy the JBL Flip 6?
The JBL Flip 6 is an excellent choice if you need a rugged and dependable speaker for a party or outdoor excursion. This Bluetooth speaker improves on the Flip 5 in several ways, most notably its resistance to water and dust thanks to its IP67 designation. However, there are some drawbacks to the Flip 6 as well. We would have loved to see JBL bring back the aux input from the Flip 4, but it appears that fewer and fewer Bluetooth speakers provide this option.
What is the difference between JBL Flip 5 and 6?
The Flip 6 has the same midrange and bass drivers as the Flip 5, plus a dedicated 10-watt tweeter for enhanced high-frequency detail. In order to sync the two speakers together, you can use the Partyboost function that is built into JBL speakers.
